Artefact 6 - 300 Words Evaluation

In this artefact I decided to explore Thai cinema. And this time the movie I had chosen was Shutter (2004). There have been many version of the films made in other languages in different parts of the world. I managed to find the most effective versions, while others were not available on the net. I began with asking the audience about their views on remake film. 43% of the audience believed that remake films were a good idea, while the remaining had mixed feelings.

I then showed them four clips including the original Shutter (2004). 63% believed that the English remake of the film also named Shutter (2008) was more interesting then the original and the other two remakes. I also wanted to find out if the audience thought that the story of all the films were same. The original film had the most ranking while the other had mixed. But the real answer to that question was that all the films followed the same storyline.

The audience also ranked the over all presentation of all the films and the original Thai film topped the ranking overall. 88% of the audience believed that the English version of the film has done justice to the original film because it was closest and exactly the same as 2004. While the Sivi (2007) Tamil version and the most recent Bollywood’s CLICK (2010) failed to give the same effect as the original and English. 63% audience stated that they would recommend this film to others but had mixed feelings about why they would recommend it.

Through this artefact I was able to find out that remake films are not bad but a way of entertaining the audience and at the same time a way of making profit and exhibiting creativity in a new form.

In this artefact I decided to explore the world of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The play is well known to everyone, I still wanted to find out whether the audience knew that Romeo and Juliet was a play or a film. I found out 100% audience were aware that it was a play.

I decided to show three different clips of films made on Romeo and Juliet. The first clip was the George Cukor 1936 version of Romeo and Juliet, second clip was the Franco Zeffirelli film made in 1968. The final and the most recent one on screen was the Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 version. 80% of the audience agreed that the 1936 film was an adaptation of the play. 50% believed that the most interesting clip was the 1996 version of the play. Because it was set in modern times and was updated compare to the previous films and it’s the first of it’s kind.

40% were interested in the 1936 version main reasons being, that the cast looked older then the characters age and was more dramatic. Majority of the audience believed that 1968 version have done justice to Shakespeare work, by being true to the way Shakespeare had planned and written his play to be show to everyone.

And finally 70% were not sure how they would want to see if it was made again on screen. They want to see how creative and yet be faithful can the filmmaker be to the work of the writer.

The final conclusion of this artefact is that Romeo and Juliet is an adaptation and I believe through the results it is clear that it can be made many times and yet the audience will watch it. For the final artefact I will be looking at the movie Shutter (2004).

For the fourth artefact I decided to go back and ask the audience what they think of remake films. Up to 56% rated that the remakes were good to excellent. Where as the remaining amount had mixed feelings. I decided to show my all three King Kong films clips. 86% found the King Kong 2005 version more interested then the original King Kong (1933) and King Kong (1976). Most amount of the audiences said that the 1933 and 2005 films had the same story line where as majority of the audience failed to notice the story similarities and ranked 1976 version of the film.

I also asked the audiences to rank all three films on the scale of poor to excellent. King Kong (2005) had the highest marks from out of the others two. These marking were decided by keeping the technical aspect of the films in mind. I also found out that the audiences would rather prefer to watch the King Kong 2005 version over the original which is the 1933 version of the film. The reason being, that the 2005 version of the film had better effects, good sound, good selection of star cast and also that it was a much newer version. And that they would defiantly recommend the newer version of King Kong to other people because of the similar reasons as stated above.

The aim was to see if the audience can recognise the original film as well as to see which of the films gets the most ranking. I have come to conclude that the newer version is more accepted because of the time that we live in. People are expecting these adventures films to be as realistic as possible. The 2005 version have proven to the one that has more affect on everyone.

THE ART ORGANISATION

The Art Organisation of Nottingham is located on Station Street near the train station. The main gallery building, 21 Station St, is hosting three galleries and tea bar, events space, artist facilities and studios which opened in 2007. In 2009 TAO opened the second building at 3-9 Station St, serving creative industries with further office, studio and workshop space. Activities for these buildings are now managed by an independent community interest company under the management of Liam Woodgates and Lynne Russell. TAO is in the process of opening a Recycle Centre due to open at the end of February 2010. This will allow people drop off unwanted household items, clothes, books and videos, wood, paint, etc, to be given away. TAO is also working to develop an IT suite suitable for print and publishing. Both TAO and TAO Nottingham are determined to succeed in these efforts. TAO Nottingham has working relationships with many aspects of the arts society in the city and region and offers volunteer opportunities for the community to get involved.

Course introduction

Marketing Communications covers the selection and application of the main communication tools available to organisations in pursuit of their marketing goals. This work is often carried out by specialist agencies, and involves both strategic thinking and the development of creative solutions. This calls for a blend of research-based knowledge with the practice of high-level, often extremely creative skills. The ultimate aim of this course is to enhance your job effectiveness and satisfaction, thereby improving your career advancement prospects.

Course content

The course covers the main marketing communication techniques and provides you with a sufficient foundation in marketing to enable you to work easily with marketing managers. During your induction week you will study for the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Introductory Certificate in Marketing, which will give you a firm grounding in the basics of marketing before the course begins. Successfully completing this Certificate will also entitle you to CIM membership during your study period.

Core modules: Advertising Management and Brand Delivery • Analysis and Strategy for Marketing Communications • Buyer Behaviour • Direct and Interactive Marketing • Integrated Marketing Communications Campaign Project • Managing Marketing Communications • Marketing and Media Research Management • Public Relations and Reputation Management • Sales Promotion and Sales Management

The course has a flexible approach to teaching and learning using a combination of lectures, seminars, case studies and group work. Of particular importance for the marketing communication modules are the four whole-day Campaign Planning workshops where students are required to put into practice some of the theories learnt across a wide range of markets from fast-moving consumer-goods to not-for-profit organisations. Students are expected to develop presentation skills and the ability to work well in teams.

Students’ performance in the seven taught modules is normally assessed by a combination of examination and coursework assignment, each of which can involve essay or case study analysis or a combination of the two.

The final module involves a project that is the natural summation and conclusion of everything that students have learnt. In appropriate places they will be able to build into the rationale of the plan the various frameworks and academic theories they have learnt in the individual modules.

Students opting for the Integrated Marketing Communications type of project will be required to examine in-depth a specific aspect of marketing communications within their recommended Campaign Plan. This will involve them in individual research beyond the material provided in the taught modules and the workshops.

Entry requirements

You should normally hold a first degree from a recognised institution (minimum Lower Second Class Honours), or international equivalent. Exceptionally, non-graduates with significant practitioner experience of marketing and/or marketing communications can also be considered.
If English is not your first language, you will need an IELTS score of 6.5, with a minimum score of 6 in each element.

Associated Careers

Alumni of this course can be found in management jobs throughout the world in marketing, media and communications organisations.

More information

The course is taught on a semester basis. Part-time students are expected to attend two evenings per week from 6pm to 9pm in each of the four semesters. They are expected to attend the four all-day Campaign Planning workshops. Typically these will take place on Saturdays.

The third artefact consisted of comparing the 1978 The Inglorious Bastards, to the 2009 Inglorious Basterds. Through this artifact I wanted to find out the similarities and differences between these two films. Through this artefact I have found out that not many people were aware of the 1978 version of the film at all. Also when asked if the 2009 version of the film was a remake of the original film. The answer that I received was that both of the films were totally different from each other. I also asked the audience to read the title of both of the films carefully and see if they can spot anything different. Majority of the audience were not able to identify the spelling difference of BASTARDS in the titles. The reason why I asked this question was because Enzo G. Castellari had spelled his 1978 film with an ‘A’ in the word whereas Quentin Tarantino spelled his 2009 film with an ‘E’.

I also asked the audience to identify which film would they rather be more interested in watching and why. Majority of the people favored Quentin Tarantino 2009, The Inglorious Basterds. Because they believe that it was more action packed, more up to date, amazing sound design, good recognised star cast especially Brad Pitt and also that this film was directed by Quentin Tarantino.

The conclusion for this artefact is that the Quentin Tarantino film is not a remake of the, The Inglorious Bastards (1978). The 2009 film only share a similar name but spelt differently and they were set around the World Was II time. Quentin Tarantino film had the most hits and even if it does come in the remake category, this film has managed to do a really good business compare to most of other remake films.

This is a short Korean film that I came across back in 2008. The first time I watched it, I was impressed with the directorial style and how the characters in the film carried the story just by the reactions and actions. Even though there aren’t any dialogues by the cast in the film. However there is another character in the film which is of a fairy/cupid, who is like a guide/ storyteller, in the short film.

The second artefact was to compare a Japanese anime movie, Blood: The Last Vampire (2000) and compare it to the 2009 live action movie. Through my questioner I wanted to find out how many people are aware of this movie, what they thought about the two clips I showed them from both anime and the live movie. Also I asked about the duration of the anime as well as the story line that the audience picked up on while previewing the two clips. And finally rating the character design of 2009 to 2000, and three things they noticed in both of the clips.

Through my results I found out that very few have heard about the anime while most of them had just seen the live action movie. And those who had seen the live action rated the movie clips good while anime was rated average. All the participants in the questioner got the length of the anime wrong. They also explained that the both of the films were very different to each other but the character design was exactly as the original anime.

My main answers were the three things they had noticed different in both of the clips. The common answers I got were about the extra characters that were in the live action movie, the fast phase action, and both of the clips didn’t show the same storyline.

This time my intensions were to compare the film design. After the questioner was completed I verbally explained the deference between both films to the participants who were unaware of one or the other film versions. In the anime there is so much to cover that in the 2009 live action version doesn’t have. However the main character and the background story of the main character is the same.

Artefact 1 - Evalution 300 words

For my first artefact I decided to compare the end fighting scene of Kill Bill (2003), with the Japanese 1973, Sex and Fury. Many people who have seen both of the films have said that Kill Bill fighting scene was an exact copy from the Sex and Fury. I wanted to find out how much of that was true. I showed both of the fighting scenes to the chosen audience with a questioner to fill after words. The results I got from the questioner and feedback from the audience was that, none of them had ever heard of Sex and Fury at all.

They all ranked both of the fighting scenes as being mostly good. The results showed that Kill Bill fighting scene is identical but to a certain extant from the Japanese film. Kill Bill was noted as the most fast paced fighting scene where they concentrated mostly on getting the best fighting scene with more blood and high action from main female character. Where as the Sex and Fury was considered to be slow to build the reaction and expression of the main character to keep the scene very tense.

The results also pointed out that in both clips the main characters got stabbed and shot countless times and still managed to be alive.
The conclusion is that, the clip is Kill Bill is an inspired copy of the Japanese Sex and Fury. The Japanese version involved more of the character building, also her body parts were visible to have that sex appeal which was the main target of the Japanese Pinky Violence genre.

From these results the second artefact that I will be looking at is the Animated and live action manga film, Blood the Last Vampire. I am expecting to find a link between the artefacts.

On 26th when I was meant to show my first artefact to my tutor. I realised when I mentioned my artefact answer to my tutor. My first artefact idea was to compare the scene from Kill Bill to the one in Sex & Fury. They both were fighting sequences.

How ever the films were correct but the clips I decided to compare they were totally different. While I was conducting my questioner I felt confused my self if the clips I was asked that were similar at all. There was no resemblance to any of the clips. Because the Kill Bill I showed was completely wrong. I was meant to compare the fighting sequence where the main characters fights these men’s with swords and they never stop attacking her.
And the same sequence was taken from the movie Sex and Fury.

I have to re do my artefact to get it right..

The Art Organisation TAO - Nadim Chaudry – Exhibition

This video showed the art work of Nadim Chaudry who also made this video for his own promotion. The length of this document was eight minutes and four seconds. And all through the video there was background music playing which I though could have been reduced. And I also believe that the author of the video should have considered adding maybe interviews and thoughts of the people who came to see the exhibition to make his promotional video a boost to sell it self. Magazine Night Venue - The Arts Organisation

This video was made in 2007, in which Robert Smith of TAO is being interviewed. What I noticed in video was that Robert spoke continuously for five and a half minute of the duration. And the whole time the frame size of the interview was kept the same. There was very less light on Robert to make him clearly visible, maybe the white balance was not checked before the interview took place. This could have made a difference in the picture quality. The microphone picked up a lot of distance noises, because I think the microphone was too far off from Robert. If it was closer the interviewee sound could have been better. And I believe if the interview was done a quite place to capture the clear sound and then in the edit an atmosphere track could have been applied to it. Also in between there were shots of props that were in the TAO exhibition that were shown and at times the footage when from being dark to bright and while watching the video you can see the faults.

Artefact 1 – The Idea

For my first artefact I have decided to show a clip from the movie Kill Bill Volume 1 (20030, where the bride fights O-Ren Ishii in the snow at the end of the film. And compare it to a clip from the movie Sex & Fury (1973).

Because the snow fighting scene in Kill Bill is a exact copy from a scene in Sex & Fury. My aim is to achieve a deeper and varied understanding of what people think about the two scenes from the films. I intend to get my answer by having a questioner filled from each of the participant. And I expect have different answers from each of the participants. My objective is to ask particular close ended questions. However I have about three questions that are open ended. And my aim from this is to find out their opinions rather then having a set answer to choose from.

Even though I am expecting a pattern in all the answers but that completely depends on the participants own views and experience. I am expecting to find a connection that will connects each of the answers. This will hopefully lead me to the next artefact.

Client project so far…

I have been working on my proposal for the client project and so it’s been going good. I am also working on a two pages script that will show the layout of how the documentary will be in the end.

I was meant to receive some photographs and the company logo from client, who said will forward to me ASAP. But I still haven’t received them yet. However I did remind my client about the pictures and logo and I was given the same answer. I will !!

Other then that, I received an e-mail from my client about an event that was taking place on Saturday 16th January 2010, and he was wondering if I could film it. First, his request was a bit late one. I work on the weekends. If I was informed a week or 2 in advance about this event I would have been able to get time off work and film it for my client product.

Second, when he sent me the e-mail it didn’t make much sense. There wasn’t much details available of what the event was, what was happening there, and where was it taking place.

I still haven’t received any information about other events that are taking place from the client. Though I have sent another reminder to them.

Conclusion

This is a plain and simple study that shows that remakes are an experimental method of re-selling an old product to the new generation, by using the technology that is accessible to make the new audience thrive. The remakes are predominantly relying on not just as a new creation but on the name that is already notorious. However that does not mean that remakes are totally bad at making a good business. They still manage to get the audience in the cinema no matter how the individual feels about the movie in the start or in the end.

As a personal experience, I go to see these remakes to see the new element that has been added in this version of the story. That would make me be fond of this remake over the original. And the only similar technique I would mention is that if the remake is an adventurous adoption, like the King Kong (1933) compare to Peter Jackson’s 2005 remake. I would say that Peter Jackson made that adventure more realistic, though some new scenes were added that weren’t in the original. Whereas 1933 King Kong still hold its place as one of the best motion pictures of its time.

If the makers of the remake film do adapt an old classic, they should concentrate on the character development as it was in the original film. Just in Theatre, many plays of Shakespeare get made over and over again in time. The development of the play is always the same. And audience goes and sees the play again. The creators of the stage play know if you stick to the real form of presentation, they will have success. In 1996 Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo & Juliet, a big risk was taken, which was to transform the world Shakespeare in to the modern world. That new treatment was a new material that was added to the story, which fascinated the viewers. But at the same time, the development, and design of the play was exactly how Shakespeare had written.

Kurosawa and Hitchcock were both extremely influential filmmakers. They left their own legacy for the development of film and passing it on to other generations of filmmakers.

Simulated Client – Finally Ended

The final product has now been handed in. And it has already been viewed in the tutorial group. The following are the main points of feedback I received:

- Concept was not so clear – what was the message?

- Poor sound - sound levels needed to be adjusted

- Could have been improved through better technical skills

- Did not show the humor that was addressed in the proposal

- Though the ending was somewhat similar to the humor that was proposed earlier in the proposal. So that worked quite well

- Over all a good piece but could have been better

My specialization within the AV pathway is producing and directing and as a result the final product lacked high quality standards and also I had concepts that were bad and by the end they became worse. I believe that the feedback was well justified by my tutor and peers.

I could drastically improve my future projects by concentrating on my skills and using the right trained actors as well a technical crew for the actual production. I could then concentrate on directing and not worry about the rest of the technical roles, as I am not specialized in that path.

Overall I believe my concept of the Piracy was just average, due to my concept not being a strong one. I did not understand the requirements clearly and rushed in to doing the product and get it out of the way. And because of that I was unable to deliver an effective advert.

However this is a formal feedback and the real results are still to come.

I have started to edit my advert. I did not want to go over 20 seconds so I managed to get the edit up to 18 seconds and not exceed over 20 seconds because that will probably cause more dilemma on what to do with the footage in front of you. I will eventually in the end make an extended version of the advert max 30seconds for personal work. But as the assignment requires a 20 second advert I will produce the correct length.

Not all the right people managed to come to the re-shoot. So I had to cut down on the number of people which were meant to be in the advert as submitted in the proposal.

The advert is slightly different to what I had done in the script. Because the script version was going to be long for 20 seconds, in the end I decided that instead of having extra shots of these individuals in the advert getting ready to sit down to watch a movie. I decided to open the scene by having these individuals already sitting down and watching the film. And while watching the film stops half way through. And the individuals watching the film are left confused on how come the film stopped half way through. Once one of the person looks at the DVD to see why it’s not working. I had one person garbed the DVD of the first person and have a look at and then reveals, that it’s a pirated DVD.

For the look of the advert I wanted to have these people watching the film with lights off. Just to have those flickering reflections which get on you. First it came as a difficult challenge to give the look to it. We had to use the lighting with blue GELS x2 to give that blue look of the TV when it’s on the television static effect. We managed to get it just about right. Janet Chu who did the lighting did few experiments using the blue and black gels. But blue ones came the right one to be.

The sound has been recorded separately because the advert is short and snappy and shows different moments. For that reason the sound will be used to sync representing different moments while watching the film.

If it doesn’t make sense I hope by the final edit I will be able to show what I was hoping to portray.

Jools wants to see the 20 second edit by today 3pm. It doesn’t have to be a finish edit but a rough edit. I have not added the sound to the advert yet which would give the feel of watching a movie. Because I have recorded the sound separate. And in the edit I will try and synchronise it. So far the edit has been viewed by one person. I and I have been told it’s good. But I want to get more people to view the edit and give me their feedbacks before the final edit is handed in.

Today I did my filming for my advert for the stimulated client project and it went all right but it could have been better. After the filming I came back home and decided to go over the footage to have a look at it. It played fine on the Z1 camera but when I ejected it and waited for it to come out. It wouldn’t come out at all. I didn’t even force it to open or tried to take the tape out forcefully but it still wouldn’t come out. And when it did. The tape came out in pieces.

I have e-mailed my tutor and have informed him about my problem. But now I have to re-shoot the footage again. And thank god I had planned in some re-shoot days if something like that was to occur. I have to try and get all the crew again together. And get this done ASAP. But this time I will try and get the all right a bit better.

A week Missed

I have been off sick for just about a week now because I was given TAMIFLU. Which unfortunately I think is given if you have the new virus “SWINE FLU”. And because of that I could not attend university or keep up with my work. As it had hit me really badly, every time I decided to carry on with my work at home. And I looked at the papers and books I was meant to be reading for my research project the words use to just fly of the page. And I use to get water in my eyes. Not because I was crying because my eyes were hurting so badly, followed by major headaches. It was a really bad experience. Now I am feeling a little better and back in university. I have a lot to catch up to. First, I need to do a presentation for my simulated client project. Second, I need to do my pre-production ASAP for my AD. And also the research project which is meant to be handed in by 15th December.

Hopefully I should be back on track once I organise all the delayed work.

Piracy Awarness Ad

I have trying to pre viz my ad in frame forge as I am not good in hand drawing. But unfortunately there have been some power cuts in the university and also the computer room with the software on got something wrong with all the computers. Can’t use them at all, so that’s out of the way.

The idea which I want to do for my ad is about a group of friends doing a movie night in different time scale each time. And every time they put an original DVD in to the DVD player to watch. Series of quick shots will show popcorn being made in the microwave as well as the group of friends being comfortable while watching the movies. In the last few seconds I will be showing that on another movie night, one of the friends from the group puts in a Pirated DVD in to the player. Popcorn goes in to the microwave wave again. And all the friends get comfy to watch the new movie that’s not even out on the Original DVD yet. A piracy warning sign will appears on the TV screen.

I believe it’s a very simple idea and can work. Once the computers in w207 comes back online I will make a frame forge of the ad and try and set it to the length of 20 seconds as an AVI file to see how it will look as a moving image.

I really like the quick pace of the advert below. I would like to make mine with the same swiftness.

This poster very interesting because it just informs you straight away that you will be in trouble if you get caught with a camera while in the cinema.

Concepts for the 20s advert for Fight Against Piracy

Concept 1:

A man mid 30’s is sitting in a coffee shop. Mellow music plays in the background off a radio. He has his laptop in front of him. He seems very calm and keeps looking around the shop and then to his laptop. He’s downloading a song when suddenly out of nowhere a grim reaper appears from nowhere and sits in front of him. Smile fades away from the man face in shock.

In this concept I want to show, that you don’t have to look like thief to be doing such activities. It can be anyone. And the grim reaper is there to represent the law.

I believe this is good example of the sort of style I am looking for in this concept. This is about two guys sitting a having normal chat about some insurance when suddenly out of nowhere a really weird looking guy comes in and disturbs their conversation with his singing. In the song he just suggests them the cheapest way of finding a good deal is by going on a comparing website. Even though this advert is not about piracy. This is just an example of the sort of feel that I am looking for in this concept. The adverts is not trying to sell a company who does good deals but is suggesting the audience to try this website to compare the different companies that provide cheapest insurance. This site will help them. It is a self-choice afterwards to follow the suggestion it has given.

In my concept I want to shows that you the suddenly appearing of the grim reaper just like the guy in this advert. But you wont see the grim reaper getting up and dancing and singing along. He is there to represent the law, and grim is death. It is a WARINING to the people who does illegal activities not a SUGGESTION.

This advert is about a guy who sits and enjoys his pizza. The first time I saw the girls running wild. I personally thought they were running for the guy. But as I kept on watching I realize that they were actually running towards the Pizza Hut and not this famous celebrity who is also sitting in the Pizza Hut. Sometimes these kind of adverts are total distraction from the main theme, and leads the audience mind to a different direction and then suddenly out of nowhere makes you think “uhh, that’s clever”, that’s what I personally thought when I saw this ad. And there are plenty of other adverts, which leads the audience to a different direction and then hit them with a surprise which their mind did not expect.

Concept 2:

A man is sitting in a timeless place under a spotlight, and everything else around his is dark. He is wearing jail like cloths. He sobs as he looks around in the darkness. He looks in his hands; in one he holds a picture of a woman with a baby and in other a CD with “PIRACY” written on it. In the background you can hear sounds of locker being closed.

In this concept I am trying to portray the consequences of doing piracy. The message behind the man holding a picture in one hand and the CD in other is that the moments he missed out on. The picture is the family he could be living with. The baby he could be holding in his arm right now. The CD is the actions, which he did wrong. And he has realised his wrongdoing as he now is sobbing, regretting his upon his actions.

This advert is set in a timeless place. This is totally different to this concept because it’s not dark or gritty. In this the guy is promoting his album, and the visual concept of the ad made me understand that one of the songs in the album might be about loneliness and love or something along those lines.

This is 20 seconds advert of a fragrance. The reason why I decided to use this as an example is to see if I can fit, my concept of a timeless place in to 20 seconds. This advert is not set in a timeless place. But it is set in a very different world with a very dark, yet glamour’s feel to it. It has approximately 11 shots in 20 seconds, and it manages to tell its audience in just few seconds about the product.

I personally believe this advert is very powerful to support this concept. It shows a daily life of a man. And a boy who he sees everywhere he goes in the same position, in the office, on the road, in the house, under the table and on the bedroom floor. Why? Because he made one big mistake, which now haunts him. The little boy is probably nobody to him. But of his actions he has dragged the boy into his life, which lingers around him and will stay with him for the rest of his life.

In his personal life, there is a lot of distance and quietness. Especially where he and his wife share the same bed but are very much apart and the gap in between the couple explains it. The advert is to warn the people who don’t’ take notice of their speed or look for any dangers, which may occur on the road. This man decisions took this boy life, which he sees, everywhere. And now he feels guilty. The result of your action may live with you forever.

Visually I would like to show the loneliness of the guy in my ad like in figure 1. But with dark and gritty but not glamour’s feel to it like in figure 2. The phase would probably be same as figure 2 as I am aiming to fit the concept in 20 seconds. The feel I want to give to the audiences is of figure 3, the CONSEQUENCE. The message is the moments you will not experience but the penalty of illegal activity. You may not end up paying a big ransom and get back in to your daily life. You may end up behind bars and loose on the freedom that you could have had.

This ad is a bit scary. I would personally hate it, if one of the characters from a scary movie came to life. This ad works really well because it shows a guy doing illegal downloads of a new movie and then an alien who to me represents THE LAW has come to haunt him down for doing such activity. I like the concept of this ad. It’s dark and very gritty. It reminds me of a movie ALONE IN THE DARK. The light rock music in the backgrounds evens the whole atmosphere out and shows that the guy downloading the movie is very comfortable at what he is doing.

This is a very old advert for VHS. Its very simple but it give a lot of information about how to spot a original from a copy. And at the same time it’s tells its viewers about the consequences of owning a pirate copy of any film could lead to a serious law suit.

I believe this animated is a very powerful ad against movie piracy. The message it gave to me is that it can be anyone who could be behind the bars for doing illegal activities such as movie piracy. It’s also powerful in that sense as the guy regrets upon his actions as he sits down and starts to cry. This is one of the newest anti-piracy ads produces around 2000’s.

These are just the few of the once I have viewed. There are plenty others that we see nearly every day while watching a movie in the cinema. They always have warning against illegal activities of stealing a movie just before a feature film starts.

These activities have some serious consequences, getting banned from future performances or being legally prosecuted if caught doing such activities.

Recent adverts which I have come to notice in the cinemas are where a famous celebrity talks into a camera and talks about how video piracy is affecting him/her and their movie business. In the end they leave with a message “love movies, HATE PIRACY” because the real experience of watching movies is in the cinema.

I personally believe that this is the strongest anti-piracy video ever made. This shows a group of film makers being ambushed by pirates which represents the illegal downloader’s, “CRIMINALAS”. How they come and steal the hard work and creativity which in the end destroys the main source.

If these illegal activities keep on going, us the new generation of filmmakers or anyone who could end up making a change in this world will end up suffering in the end.

Those who take the downloading option as the cheapest and the easiest route of entertaining them self eventually in the end will get caught. And the previous ad about the guy being out in a jail and regretting his actions is just one of the stories. This might be your story.

They want you to produce a piece of multimedia that will address the points above. You have six weeks to complete the task and you are required to produce a short proposal of your designs and ideas then you will produce the multimedia product.

If I were to remake a film, what aspect of design can be used to make the remake a success?

As I have already explained the points in the Background research about the failure of films and the culture influence. I would like to investigate what aspect of design can be used to make the remake a success. Initially I would compare the character structure, in both remake and original film. I aim to compare the style that was used to progress those characters within the films using their own unique technical performance. Then to cross reference such attributes in remakes of such films that disregard the rustic technique of Avant Garde film making and enter into mainstream commercial and glamorous cinema.

This is it. I am in my final year now. This is where the real stress begins. The first and second year of the university have just been preparing point. From October 2009 until July 2010 our learning is going to be tested. On Monday 13^th October we received our introduction for the year and also we were given the tasks of what we will be doing from now till end of the 3^rd year.

The modules we will be studying this year are:

Personal Research Project (PRP) – 50 credit points

Client Project – 50 credit points

SPP3 – 50 credit points

PRP - There are two parts to the PRP. Part one is to produce a written report in the first term. Part two is to produce practice laid artefacts, six in total. This part will carry on for term two and three.

Client Project - There are also two parts to the Client Project. Part one is a Simulated Project in the first term. This is a short 6 weeks project. Two weeks are spent to work on the idea and presenting a proposal for the final agreed idea. Four weeks will be spent of making the multimedia idea that was agreed at the presentation. The second part is to find a real live client. And this part will carry on for term two and three. Part one and two will run along side the PRP and SPP3.

SPP3 – SPP3 doesn’t start until term two. This will carry on for term and three along side the PRP and Live Client Project.

This year involves a lot of reading and research as well as practical at the end of research.

Well.

To be really honest, I think it could have been better. Not many people agree to that, but I personally think it could have been better from my side. The little boy Aidan was really good,. Inspire Academy have done an amazing job at training their kids. There were times where I was explaining things to Aidan and he was listening but he himself had a different intake on what I was asking him to do. He agreed to what I explained him, and knew exactly what to do, and also he told me how his tutors back at Inspire have thought him.

This make me think, DAMN I need to learn from the guys who teaches these little kids to work with actors. But me as a director could have done a better job. I knew what I wanted out of Aidan but I failed to get that character out of him.

But then again, I am in the learning process; in time hopefully I will improve my self. And also I am thinking of re-doing those shots I did with Aidan in the park. Not because he didn’t do it right, it’s because I think I needed to engage Aidan with the character. This is where I lacked.

Other then that I think me and Aidan communicated

well, I like to think so. Aidan is a very enthusiastic, energetic, funny and very ambitious about acting, and not to forget he is a sweet killer :). I think he is brilliant. Crisis, Crisis and more Crisis……..

Just as everything was going to plan, the most important parts of the production started to fall.

I had the whole crew sorted. But like they say, “Even in great times, Worst comes without any warnings”. I don’t know who said this but it’s true.

My camera assistant, Anila Khanna and my adult male actor, Gordon, have now dropped out because of some personal circumstances. And I do not have the right to stop them as it is something personal; otherwise I would not have allowed letting them just go away like this.

So now I am back to stage 1 again. I have quickly printed some foyers out and have given it in to Broadway cinema as many people doing acting visit that place, at least one of them is bound to pick on up. Also I have changed the date of my AD I had put up on StarNow. Waiting to hear replies now from anyone interested in playing the male adult role.

I have also e-mailed, whole of the first and second year students to do my camera work for me. Which I personally think would be a great experience to work on and also add the experience in to their portfolio.

Little Boy

I manage to find Aidan through Matty Hogarth who suggested me to contact the Inspire Academy. And after I contacted them I spoke to Luke Gell, the head of the Academy. I sent a copy of my script to him and he agreed to find me a little boy between the ages of 8-9 years old. After few days of waiting I finally received a phone call from Luke, telling me he have found a suitable boy to play the character.

Aidan Hog, is also a member of the Academy like Matty Hogarth. They both are supervised Luke. Aidan is very new to the Academy and I personally think this would be a really great experience for him to get a taste of being in front of the camera.

While trying to see where my film would fit the most I visited a website which I came across while doing my first SPP2 assignment on Networking. I was browsing through www.shootingpeople.com and viewing some of the work which people had done in the past, and came across a similar type of short film which has a little bit resemblance to what my short is about. Gordon was referred to me by a friend of mine. Gordon is very much interested in acting and agreed straight away to be apart of the film. Even though he looks quite younger for his character, I am going to get a make up artist who will also be applying make up on Matty the Teenage boy to make Gordon look a bit older to fit his character. Gordon was quite surprised to hear that the feature does not include any dialogues. And was willing to try and be a part of the project even though he has mostly done theatre acting and never in a moving picture.

Gordon will be playing the role of the adult Male/Boyfriend in the feature and is looking forward to play a Bad character as he have done that before.

Teenage Boy

I found Matty through a friend of mine who was helping me to find someone to play the part of the Teenage boy in my script. Matty is very ambitious about acting as I came to know about him. He agreed to work in the short feature way before he even read the script. And after reading the script he agreed that he will defiantly, would like to be a part of the project.

Matty also is a member at the Inspire Academy Nottingham which is run by Luke Gell. Matty afterwards suggested that I should contact Inspire Academy if I am still in search for a younger boy to play the part of the Little Boy. And as I was completely unaware of the Academy until Matty told me. I realised, that there are so much stuff that I am completely clueless to and how you actors can also be so helpful in many ways other then doing acting.

Reading Your Own Work Out Loud.

I had sometime to read my script out loud and pick up any mistakes I did up. Which is always useful, as I was reading my script out loud not only did I came across some mistakes in writing. But also a mistake I was making, or was going to make was of giving my characters a name and identity on the paper.

But in visual concept it was hard to understand who these characters were. Because I am not using any dialogues in the film, which would make the identity of the character much easier for the audience to understand. I decided to scrap all the names I had given to the characters and just go with the usual A, B and C. My final script includes characters such as Little Boy, Teenager Boy, the Man/Boyfriend and the Mother.

Which in my opinion works better now then it did before. The visual images should be very easy for the audience to understand the relationship of each characters share.

However, there are still some mistakes which I probably have not yet come across in the script by reading it loud. These mistakes should be more visible for a third party.

To find the actors who fit in the right for my characters. I decided to put make a FACEBOOK group and invited all the members of my friends list and also asked them to invite other people who maybe interested in acting or know who is an actor. I also sent an e-mail o the College Street head Alistair, but got no reply. Eventually I was getting frustrated minute by minute as the dead line was approaching close. I was literally saved by Marilyn Ann Bird.

Marilyn is a local actress who is a graduate of Birmingham School of Acting and is currently based in Nottingham. She approached me and offer to help and was quite interested in the project.

Marilyn sent me her CV and I was quite surprised by the amount of work she has done over the years. And majority of them included student productions. Title: Unspoken

UnSpoken is a story of Robbie. Robbie is 17 years old teenagers, who have been deeply disturbed by the events of his early life. The story unfolds by Robbie’s memories flashbacks.
The visual story of the films is totally depending on the actor’s portrayal of the characters life. There is no audio involved. But a much muffled sound is being used to give the whole film a feel of total isolation of Robbie’s life from the world.

I have started working on my script and so far it has been coming along quite well. After I had done the script it was read by Director Chris Cooke of (One For The Road - 2003)a guest lecture who is here with an actress, to help us with our script read it and liked it. He gave me some feedback on the script saying its good but there is too much visual direction going on and also I could do with cutting down a bit of the script. I also sent a copy to jools who gave me kind of the same feedback as Chris. So I started working on my second draft of the script. Keeping the feedback I had recived from both Jools and Chris I edited the stuff which was unnessery and cutting down the pages to 5 from 7 as 1 page is equal to 1 minute. Because my script does not involve any dialouges its mostly based on the charaters actions. I personally think 5pages are equal to 6 minutes for my short.

Finally the group project has come to an end. And through this experience we have realised what is good in us and what is bad. We have also come to see who is good in what role. We also had a presentation done today in front of the tutors and the rest of peers to showcase and talk about our final work. As I had mentioned in the earlier report I wrote for how the bad start began. But now I am willing to take back my words without any hesitation that those who were being slow in the start finally pulled their weight together and delivered a good reasonable documentary. The feed back given to us by our tutors was very useful to take in and hopefully the feedback given to us will be used in our next FICTIONAL PROJECT. THE BAD START OF PRODUCTION

We had a week off from our lectures and seminars of Exploring multimedia to go away and film our documentary. But before we could even go out and film we had to plan our documentary. The way it will look, sound, feel and blah blah… But we never had enough time as a group to actually meet up and discuss what we were going to do. And the whole planning should have been done and dusted way before we had the filming week. Few of us managed to meet up and work on the planning of the documentary. There was a lot of YAP YAP but none of WORK WORK or in other words COME ON GUYS LETS GO OUT AND FILM THIS BABY NOW.

There were a lot of moments when I was angry at the director who actually never got back to anyone on time to update us of what was happening. And to be honest I can’t just blame the director. It was my own fault too as well as the others. WE CLEARLY DID NOT HAVE TEAM WORK SPRIT IN US.

I am not trying to justify my self by saying that I started getting in contact with the group including the director and asking to let us all know when are we going to be filming. There was no replay, so I tried to get in touch with everyone through TEXT messages and E-mails, but still got no answerer from anyone. And suddenly there was 2/3 replies from the other members of the group saying they don’t know when they will be filming as the director haven’t got back to anyone.

So I decided to get touch with the director though the e-mail and text message but didn’t hear anything again. Worrying about the whole documentary I e-mailed everyone saying that we have to stop being lazy start getting back to text’s and e-mails on time. And let’s not waste time on filming.

I also stated in the e-mails that this whole week will give us time to sort out any mistake we make and other stuff. I then got an e-mail or text from the director saying what day we are filming and what time. WHAT! The day of filming was set to too late. I then again got in touch with everyone through the e-mail telling them that the day of filming is set to too late we need to take advantage of the whole week so lets start filming what are we waiting for? I also mentioned other reasons why we should not film on that day. It was the last day of the week, FRIDAY. And the week after was for editing.

A member of group e-mailed me saying I am bullying the director by telling him he had made a wrong decision. Which I personally think was a wrong decision from the start. Even the director e-mailed me saying that we will get everything done in that day and the day of shooting which was booked the week we were meant to be editing. I was told they would get all the footage they needed and there won’t be anything wrong with it. But to make me satisfy this answerer was not enough. I still apologised to the director and to anyone else who might have gotten hurt by my e-mails.

Like I said I am not trying to justify my self all I am saying is that I was trying to make efforts by making them do things the right way. I spent most of my time trying to get everyone to get things on the go.

The Day Of Filming arrives!!!

The day came and time to meet for the filming was 5pm… Ok, fair enough if the time was ok but why leave the MOST IMPORTANT WORK TO THE LAST MINUTE? The risk assessment sheets that had to be signed by a tutor were not signed in advance. While we were told by our director that he would get them signed. Only an hour away before we were going to film and the documents are not even signed neither by the tutors or the location responsible. What a great start. There was no tutor available to sign the documents. If the director wasn't able to come in advance he could have given that responsibility to someone else.

These were the mistakes I was trying to warn them about. WE CAN NOT FILM ON A LOCATION BEFORE THE MOST IMPORTANT AND CRUCIAL PART ARE NOT CLEARED BY THE TUTORS.

So the next plan was to still go ahead and film and get these signed later. We arrive at the location and start filming but without a clue of what we wanted because we had the time we did not sit down and plan this carefully in advance. The camera started rolling. And we were filming the footage that we DID NOT need at all. If we had planned the shots and the scenes we would have found it easy to shoot only what we wanted.

And the same thing happened on the next day of the shoot. Still the signing of the papers was left to too late. And the group decided to go ahead and film. The same mistakes were repeated again.

My biggest concern was the whole thing as well as not failing the assignment. I explained the whole situation to my tutor and then I was told that we had been informed before hand to get the right documents signed before we could film. And the tutor repeated exactly the same things I was warning my group about. Our footage was then seen by our tutor and straight away we were told to re-shoot it all.

Not everyone gets a second chance in real life we have been given this chance to make it look good this time with proper preparation. And now I hope that please let this be good. Because as the tutor warned us if we don’t follow the guidelines we might end up failing this assignment and I don’t want that!

Again to conclude this all I have to say that our group did a rubbish job in preparing this documentary. And I hope we don’t repeat the same mistake again.

The Grim Reaper Of Gedling...

Our subject of documentary is a 26 years old Jim Coldwell. He is an interesting character because even though he is quite young he still isn’t you normal typical usual 26 years old men who like to go out and party all night. He doesn’t have the same interest or hobbies like other 26 years old. While other 26 years old are busy partying, Jim for his time pass plays lawn bowls at a pensioners centre. He also has an other job where he works at a petrol station. Why did we decide to make a documentary on him? Because we think that there are not that many 26 years old men who actually do lawn bowls as a hobby or have a very deep attraction towards the game. In reality Jim is a very fantastic person as we have heard from the people he plays with. They all have something interesting to say about him when ever we ask them. He is called the grim reaper of Gedling by the members at the centre. He has his own personal lawn bowls made with a Grim Reaper design on them.

This picture shot is from the recently released movie called HUNEGR directed by a British filmmaker Steven McQueen.

The first thing that caught my eye was the light that was coming from outside. Maybe because to me this represents freedom and ones hope to break free the chains slavery. And also that there is light in the image but the rest of is dark. Straight after the light my eyes were pulled away to a face of the character. And the way my eyes pulled towards his face was through a piece of string which was connected to a CAN and the way his arm was placed on the window which was dragging my eyes attention to the source. The face was lit with the light coming from outside. Pale skin, long unwashed hair, no cloths on the body and the emotion on the face of the character made the picture very interesting. Even though there is not enough light on the character face as where he is standing there is all dark around him expect this little hole is lit up full. There is hope of freedom connected to this scene, a scene of injustice. A gloomy period of one is being locked away from the colour full life outside without committing a crime.

JOURNAL TASK

Using your own personal experiences write a few lines that describe how a personal contact has provided a creative opportunity for you?

I have always been fascinated by reading books since the age of 12. When I hit my teens I started reading Harry Potter and lord of the rings sort of stories. A time came when I drifted away from the books and didn’t care much for the stories or any sort just purely education type books were the only type I read just because of the homework and assignments. In school when the GCSE’s came we started learning Romeo and Juliet. That was the first and last Shakespeare books I read. The story impressed me a lot as it had the same similarities to the story of HEER RANJHA written by Waris Shah in 1766 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heer_Ranjha). Heer Ranjha is one of the four popular tragic love stories of Punjab.

Where as Romeo and Juliet was written for stage purpose and it is unknown when the book was actually written. There are various dates which is the right one no one knows http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romeo_and_juliet.

While we use to read Romeo and Juliet in school we were sometimes asked to act the parts of one particular character. “You learn by doing it”, this got me interested in acting. I was already determined to work for TV and Film in the future but acting the parts out got me interested in acting too. I started searing for local acting school in Nottingham. I came across a few and in the end in started going to a company called MEHTAB ARTS. During the time I was with Mehtab Arts we had an opportunity to visit the Carlton Studio which use to be based in Nottingham couple of years ago.

After a year gap a family member of mine introduced me to the ART EXCHANGE Gallery in Nottingham. Through my family member I started attending the art gallery lessons which was aimed at theater art. While I was there we were taken to NCN Clarendon Collage and were given lesson in theater performance. The acting classes got me interested in to acting even more but at the same time it helped me learn skills that I can use while working with actors in future which I hope to do. And in the end of the course I was given a certificate as proof of evidence that I have completed part one of the theater performance. From a family friend I got introduced to some people at the art exchange and through the art exchange I got introduced to some professional theater directors at the Clarendon collage. This helped me build contats with them back then.

Going back to the reading, after Romeo and Juliet I was not interested in reading any other books. But call it destiny or fate what ever, a really close friend of mine introduced me to a close friend of her from her collage in 2005. As I started talking to her about our self, hobbies interests and all the other usual formalities that one does when they meet someone new I discovered we had the same interests.

She told me that she was in to reading fictional books and her favorite was the Harry Potter series. We got in this conversation where we started discussing about which characters I thought and she thought was good. Who should go away form the series and who should stay? Eager to back our favorite charters in the book I lost as she knew more about the series then me. Reason, because I had stopped reading Harry Potter after the second series. I was suggested by her that I should start reading them again. And to prove to her that I was and am a big fan of the series I started reading the books again. The more I read the more I was eager to read other books. The more I read the other books my imagination and making fictional characters and living their life inside my head became easier day by day.

An idea came into my head to write a creative piece. I started with writing poems. And writing them took time as they had to mean something. I started with writing poems and through poems short stories started to form in my head. I started writing the poem in a shot story form and that short story became a 45,893 words book. After writing the whole book, I gave it to that new friend of mine to read. Got a good response from her and then few other people read it. Some I did not even know as it was passed on to them through friends. I received some good feedback for the story and that made me thirsty to write more. I was suggested by a family member to try and publish it. I searched and searched and finally came across an editor company called SAMA EDITORIAL & PUBLISHING SERVICES based in Karachi, Pakistan. (This is also mentioned in the previous journal below).

I am quite thankful to this friend of mine who got me back into the creative field. I see the world from a different perspective now as I use to see it before.

I have no other actual creative field contact in the industry that I know of. As far as I have known that TV and Film is what I want to do. I have been trying to get in contacts with different production companies and TV channels and I have spoken from the receptionist to the recruitment manger of GEO TV Pakistan. And to get through the recruitment manager in the HR department I went through Programming department, News Department etc, and finally to the HR department. Along the way I spoke to a lot of different people and found out from them how it is working for the Channel, what job roles they have and what do they have to do on the day to day bases.

I have been trying to make contacts through my own research mostly in past few years.

“The essential point of networking is human contact. Business has killed networking by making it for the career orientated person”

In my personal opinion networking still exists in other forms even if the old ones have faded in the ages. New networking styles have been introduced as the technologies have improved.
Before if people needed jobs they would usually have to go around the different companies and ask personally if there were any vacancies available. But now the same companies have made life easier for everyone by making online application websites. It is same as going into the shop and handing in you CV. The only different is you are posting your application i.e. CV online to a server of the company. That is one way of networking with a business company.

This is not the only definition of networking. The others are for examples; getting to know the right people at the right place, sharing information e.g. hobbies.

One of the personal examples I can give are that about a year ago I wrote a story. And it was read by some of friends of friends and I was given a positive feedback. I was suggested that I should try and publish it. So I started to search for publishers inside UK. I also bought a book called “WRITER’S AND ARTISTS’ YEARBOOK 2007”. The book turned out to be very helpful it had comments from the entire well known writer’s including J K Rowling. Information’s about different publishing companies and much more. As I read the book I started to think about what sort of category will my book fit it. The end conclusion was to have more searches on children/teenage genres as the book fitted in that category the most.

As I kept on searching I came across a publishing company based in Pakistan, Karachi called SAMA EDITORIAL & PUBLISHING SERVICES. I got their contact details of their and wrote them letter and posted it instead of using the e-mail address that was provided. But that was not the one I was looking for. I had sent the post “at the attention of the editor”. A week or so later I had received an e-mail from one of the main editors of the company who seemed rather interested in the whole concept of the story. And after that we had kept a contact in between as I kept on informing the editor on the progress .That is different that I never got around to getting back to them in the end. But this involves me having a personal contact with one of the big publishing giants in Pakistan.

The other experience included me ringing up and trying to find jobs at the local TV stations along getting in contact with people who worked for big TV channels like GEO TV one of media giants in Pakistan. I had an opportunity to speak to the assistant recruiter of the company. Who was mostly interested in that me being in England and why did I wanted to work for the media in Pakistan.

As you can see in my opinion I personally think that the business have made it much easier for everyone to reach for them no matter where you are in the world weather its contacting through e-mail, telephone, video conference, Air Mail etc they have opened the doors for the right people to get in.

Also it think networking have also become a business now a days. Some business have started coming with the different concepts of getting one to one instant chats such as MSN, Yahoo, AOL including mobiles have reached nearly all the four corners of the world. This has made life easier for people around the world to get in contact with not just the business people but also their own relatives living in different part of the world.

Newspapers have also got in to the business of making it easier people to just open a page full of job contacts i.e. vacancies available in local areas and also outer. In a way business have and has been developing new ways of getting the right people following them by making the right and easier pathways in front of them to reach.

To conclude all this, I do not think so that business has killed the networking instead it has made it easier for people especially as the question says career oriented person to easily use any sort of communication system, be it a word of mouth, cinema advertising, paper, internet, telephone advertising, business has made it possible and easier for the people and showed them the right path.

It’s not just for the career person but also people with different walks of like. Be it a house wife, a grandfather trying to get in touch with his grand children’s, teachers trying to get through their students, or even a political personality trying to reach out to his people in the country, no matter what the place or the situation is business has made networking for everyone.

One & A Half Year Away, And The Come Back...

A year and a half have finally ended...and now I am back in the study mode. It feels a bit awkward as I don’t know many (well to name I don’t know anyone), of course other then my sister who is doing the same course as me.

So what did I do during my time off from university?

I was working full time hours at retail company H&M... now I hold a position of a part time staff there now. During the time I was off I had the opportunity to learn about the information I did not know about the company already. And by performing what was expected of me I learned even more. From a part timer I went into fulltime, everyone in the store thought I had made the decision without over thinking. But to be honest I think this was an experience I needed.

During the full time I also got to know a lot of the main big people of the company. From the area manger to the area visual along staff from other cities stores which included a lot of managers, visuals, and sales assistants training at our branch. This in a way created a network for me. Where I knew people of such levels that I could have even recommended someone to them for a recruit.

The Good & The Bad

The good thing about the year was that it thought me how be more independent, speak my mind, be more punctual of the time I was given to perform a task, be more organised, i.e. in the absence of the manager at several occasion around the year I was put in charge of the floor. Plan a daily rota for all the team members and fit in different job roles during the day for each member. Lead & and meet the targets by working as a team was and is the only way to accomplish any good as an outcome. But mostly I gained the skills of working with different people with different needs and this just doesn’t include the staff but also the targeted customers.

I also learned how to plan daily meetings with the staff to keep them up to date with the latest happening, and also giving effective presentation. By that I mean I was also training some of the new sales assistants not just working for our store but also to those who were sent to our stores for their first time trainings. Making sure the information given to them about the company’s wants and needs was understood by the trainees. My decision making on what is right and what is wrong have improved. And as far I am concerned I don’t have any regrets. But the downfall to all this was that coming back and doing the same course but with completely new faces.

Filmmaking While Off?

I didn’t get an opportunity to do any filmmaking during my time off. So I need to refuel my head with the information about everything. However I did help my sister out with one project of her during her first year. The link and the video are below:

And I also spent several hours researching on the companies I would like to work for after I have graduated. The following companies will be added on to the blog in coming time. It took me time to retrieve my password for this blog. As the last time it was used was like a long time ago.

What expectation do I have from the come back?

I would like to improve on the weakest points which I had before I left the course. I aim to improve them this time round. I thrive to make a big impact on the industry. DREAM ON? But even dreams come true. There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, just make sure it’s not a train. I WANT to make films purely because I enjoy telling a story and also writing one. And I have a big egoistic belief in me that YES I CAN DO IT. I just simply ignore the people who have an aim to put me down in this war. I do my work you do yours. The only difference is that am better then you. And why wouldn’t I like to believe that. I don’t know anyone who thinks that about me.

I know I sound like a right big head. But the only reason I am saying this is that. You should have a lot of self belief. Keep on telling your self that you are the best. Even if you think or someone else thinks the work you have done is not satisfactory. Tell your self, you have done a well done job, because you have spent some of your valuable time on doing that work. During my time in university I want to get my head down and do my work the right way. Aim is the 1ST. impossible? Only time will tell, I only have to work hard as we all know the world is full of possibilities. Make short films by turning my little word stories in to Audio Visual story.

And I plan on making a proper website for little company I want to form which will mainly be my portfolio alongside with this blog. And I would also like to get to know the new fellow students in my year. All those I once knew have graduated. Only few remain doing their 3rd year or masters. It’s still hard to see them as they are busy with a lot of pressure on their head.

OH MY GOD... i am so not looking forward to start working fultime in my chosen career.. at the moment i have taken a year gap from educationa nd i am working in a retail shop.. Oh my god.. it is killing.. but i love it.. as the people i work makes it worth working there.. i love some people there.. this year has thaught me alot... All the stuf that i probally without knocking took for granted... but i have learnd from my mistakes and trying not to make the same mistakes again...

Creating The Original Sound Track of "LOST LOVE"

To make the original soundtrack for my 90s short film for AV I asked Emma Moosa to compose an original short piece for me. She came up with an original piece. With the help of Bindni Karia we recorded the track on the same day when Emma Composed her first piece of original music. The track is named after my short film Title "Lost Love". We haven't used many instruments just a Grand Piano. The OST of Lost Love will Soon be available to listen very soon. A very big thanks to Binsni and Emma.

After coming up with three ideas for my 90s short movie for AV I decided to choose the one that applied to me the most. After having a discussion with me Module leader we ended up choosing Young Heart. While discussing the concept we made quite a few changes.

Lost Love

A boy around the age of 16-17 and a woman who seems to be in her 30s are sitting on a swing in a park. In relation both of them looks like mother and son. The woman is trying to explain something to the boy as he smiles off in his world. The woman gets really annoyed by all this but with her expression she gets the boy’s attention so she can tell him exactly what she wants. She’s telling him to move on. There is no future together for them two. She loves her husband and cares about her three children. The young boy looks really heart broken by all she has said. He keeps quite all the time.

The woman tries her best so he can speak his own mind but the boy doesn't. The boy is completely shattered by all this. He doesn't know what to do, he give out a “this wasn’t what he had planned” expression. He tries to act normal but his heart beat starts to skip. His eyes roams around everywhere as he tries to come to terms with the harsh truth. In the end the woman ends the whole thing by walking off and leaving him alone on the swings.

Basically the reason why I chose this concept as my final was because; the people are very familiar with this subject.

I am currently writing a short film along with my Production and Direction for Camera and AV production. I am hoping to finish the script by end of May and start the filming after two weeks of script completion. Holding Patterns….

TREATMENT

1- Bogdan, writing an email in the library.

2- Bogdan, swimming in a local swimming centre.

3- Bogdan is reading a newspaper. He has a Romanian to English dictionary next to him. He regularly looks at the dictionary, and writes selected words. He is eating a pastry and sipping water as he reads.

4- Bogdan receives an official looking letter. While he is reading the letter he is also using his Romanian to English Dictionary at the same time to translate the words he doesn’t understand.

5- Bogdan puts on his CD player and dances on a Romanian song. Lost in his little world.

6- Bogdan is sitting on a bench in a park. His suitcase is next to him. He is counting his money out. There is approximately two pounds in loose change. Behind him some guys are playing football.

7- Bogdan is standing on a bus stop holding his suitcase. He takes a seat and waits for the bus.

8- Bogdan is standing outside a Government office. He enters; this government office is just like any other government offices. There is a lot of advertisement going on. E.g. posters like ‘apply for this’, ‘you are entitled to that’. Bogdan looks around the offices as he enters. He looks over to the customer service desk; the man behind the desk is busy with a customer. The Customer Service Provider Manager glances at Bogdan before resuming his paperwork. Bogdan smiles at him. He then takes a seat and waits to be seen by the Customer Service Provider Manager. He takes a sandwich out of his suitcase and quickly takes a bite out of and then puts it back in. He then takes a bottle of water out of his suitcase and takes a sip of it.

9- Bogdan gets up to stand in the queue. He holds the letter tightly in one hand and his suitcase in the other. He feels very nervous, his eyes roams around as the queue starts to move.

10- Bogdan is standing outside the government office with his head down. He holds the suitcase in one hand and the letter in the other. He lifts the letter up and looks at it for a second before ripping it into pieces. He lets the pieces out of his hand and they fly off with the wind. Bogdan then looks around for a second and walks off with his head high.

When the video started playing I couldn't make out what was actually happening in their but afterwards I found out that the stills showed a person cleaning a grass area and step by step it gets empty. The shots were taken in black and white so it was hard to make out what was going on, the phase of the stills were quite fast because the music that was used was also fast. the music was a bit loud and rockish. Could have lowered it down a bit and also could have added real sound to it e.g. digging etc. I though the music was going to be a bit nature sound as it was grass he was working with. But over all it was good.

I was a bit confused about this. What actually happens when the grim came and the man and the dog dies, or just the man dies and the dog cries. and the thing that came out of the mans mouth what was it? does the man comes back as a dog? The composition was good. it wasn't made like the others original photos but in flash. I think that was pretty good, there were some good zooming in and out effects which I found quite interesting. The phase went a bit slow and the music went along with it just fine. When the music came on it just made me jump as it was just scary type of music. Over all the work was really good with the effects.

I actually found this stills quite funny. the stills made it clear what was happening and i wasn't even lost for a bit. But i did think it was typical in the first place as he was getting late but right in the end he can't even get the door to be opened so he goes back to sleep that was funny. I like the way the effects of zooming have been used on the stills for a second i thought that "did he made this in to a video?". The timing of the shots were really good they went just fine along with the sound. The music was really peaceful. It was really good.

From the first picture you can just tell what the story is going to be about. And i found this quite good as it didn't make me confused. The story flows really well. the shots were good also. From the first picture I could tell what was this going to be about. a guy goes to sleep really late and wakes up really late, ts ready and leaves to get to his destination. Now you think that he wouldn't be late. Well that's what i thought (TYPICAL) but right in the end when you think its just the usual someone getting late CRASH.The boy gets hit by a car. You didn't expect that did you? i especially like the shots they were pretty cool. the music was really relaxing and went just fine with the timing of the stills.

The shots didn't make any sense to at all, well that's what i think. So i need a bit more explanation on it.. I don't know whose stills were they though. The Music was too loud. couldn't hear any original sound don't even know if there was any? Audio Visual Production 90s Movie Fame Project

For our next project in AV we have been asked to do a 90s short movie which will then be hopefully entered in a DepicT Short Movie Film Festival.

IDEAS

1) Lost (Working Title)

A guy and girl are sitting in a restaurant. They are very quite, just staring at each other. They don’t seem to look so happy. Everyone around them are busy in their own little world. Mellow music is playing in the restaurant to set a romantic mood but there is a lot of tension between these two people. In the middle on their table lay a piece of paper.

2) Coffee Shop (Working Title)

Our guy is working in a coffee shop. He is busy with the customer but constantly keeps looking at clock. He’s also busy chatting with his co-workers. Our guy has just finished serving his customer. He looks at the clock again and then at the door and then one of his team mates. The team mates gives him an “I don’t know gesture”. Our guy looks very disappointed but then suddenly he smiles as our girl enters the coffee shop with her friend.Our girl is running very fast as she tries to keep hold of her belongings of falling down, followed by her friend. Both of the girls are busy arguing. They both run and run until they come near a coffee shop and then suddenly stops. Our girl quickly sorts her hair out takes a deep breath and grabs her belongings of her friend. She enters the coffee shop pretending like nothing happened. As soon as she enters she notices our guys behind the cash desk at the coffee shop and smiles back at him.

3) Young Heart (Working Title)

A boy around the age of 16-17 and a woman who seems to be in her 30s are sitting on a swing in a park. The woman is trying to explain the young boy that his feeling towards her doesn’t mean anything. Still Image Movie Story PART 1

Journey for an Ice Cream

Two guys and one girl are sitting on a sofa and watching TV. The guy in the middle suddenly gets up and starts to run. His friends are left with what’s wrong with him expression. The guy runs and runs, he comes across a really attractive girl and suddenly stops and waits until she has crossed paths with him. He gives a sighs of pleasure out and continues to run. He then comes across a paper boy and bumps in to him. The papers fly’s everywhere but he continues to run. He then comes across a little girl who is holding a balloon in her hand; he pops it on purpose and continues to run leaving the little girl to cry. He then ends up in a shop and buys an ice cream.

He eats it with his eyes closed. He finishes it and starts to run again. On his way back he comes across that little girl again. She is holding a new balloon now. He pops it again leaving her crying. As he turns in to a bend he bumps into that paper boy again. The newspaper’s fly’s of everywhere, the paper boy show him his middle finger and is really annoyed with him as the boy keeps on running. He then again suddenly stops again and waits for that girl to cross path with him. After she does, he starts to run again and ends up back where he started from. He quietly sits down on the sofa again with his friends and carries on watching TV and pretends nothing happened.

Mise-en-Scene Report

Task

Produce a report on the Mise-en-Scene approach of a film of your choice.

Examine and discuss how Mise-en-Scene elements (camera and actor blocking, the audio, the set, and production design) work towards the themes of the film.

In English Mise-en-Scene means “putting into the scene”.

The script I will be looking at is “The Selfish Cut”. The main characters in the script have their own story to tell in a way. The opening of the script tells us briefly who the first main character is, the Barber. The Barber is 55 of age; he likes listening to classical music or Jazz maybe. The location he is in is his own shop. The image of a barber shop when ever you see or imagine is a hop with brown colour door, with a big glass window with blinds that has the barber shop name printed on it with fancy writing. A sign saying open or close. The time table is in the corner, and there is this red and white strip roller that just goes round and round and makes you very dizzy if you keep staring at it for a long time

The inside of the an old barber shop when we imagine seems very busy with all the elderly people hanging around, smoking cigars, reading news papers while the ancient radio plays in the background interrupted with loud laughs of old friends on some old but funny memory.

In this case our barber is very alone. The shop is empty; he is just sitting on a chair waiting for a customer to come in while listening to the radio very calmly. There are old black and white pictures hanging around but not of him, of famous celebrities from 30’s or 40’s. The shop is very small for any camera movement so I will be using more cut shots along with POV panning shots when our second character enters and looks around the shop and notices the barber. Barber POV shot when he looks over to see his customer enter, and also while cutting his hair. Even though both the character will be in the same room they will have their own space. They both have really different way of thinking or view towards of life.

Audio wise there will be radio playing in the background. And at the same time you would also hear both of the characters conversations. The naturals sound will also be included, i.e. sound of the scissors, the water spray bottle, and door creaking and etc. these sounds are very important to the script as they will give a real feel to the film of not being fake but more realistic close to the reality type of feel.

Rehearsal Plan

Rehearsal plan is like preparing for something that is about to happen. The rehearsal plan kind of gives an idea to the director to see how the actors are doing and correct any actor if they are not doing particular mood or emotion right. Normally rehearsals are done a day or two before the actual shoot of a particular scene. Some rehearsals also take place just few hours or minutes before the shooting begins. It’s always best to rehears any scene before in hand so it will be easy for the director, actor and the crew to do the shooting at once instead of over and over again.

Rehearsal plan is made up of ten main points and those are:

1. Ideas of what is about and what it means forget personally

2. Scenes needs and life needs of all the characters. Sometimes referred to as the spines and transformations (to be alone - to resolve to live with others are examples of spines and transformation for one character).

3. Each scene facts, images and the questions it raises.

4. What the scene is about its emotional event and how the scene fits the story graph of the script.

5. Possible character objective and imaginative back-story adjustment.

6. The beats of the scenes its characterisation and action verbs ideas of how you might work on the beats.

7. The scene reality and environment.

8. Research you have done and research you have left to do.

9. Your plan of what you wish to accomplish.

10. A blocking diagram (this last one means you psychologically are prepared to throw away your storyboard).

(These points are for my “Selfish Cut” script)

1) The idea of the story is to show how older generation feels about modern generation. To them we are rude and arrogant and everything bad mixed up in one little bowl. It also shows how the older generation in this case the BARBER reacts to teach the modern generation ghetto boy SAM.

2) The main two characters in the script are the Barber and Sam.

3) The scenes of the script play a very important part in the whole process. For example as you read the script you starts to imagine the characters appearance very easily and as the story continues you start to feel very tense. Why tense? Because in the story when the barber is very calm and Sam being just himself. You can easily imagine the barber face that he is annoyed and you also know at the same time that this barber will definitely do something to teach Sam so manners. The whole tense scene is just the barber being so calm and you keep thinking “oh my god what is going to do?”.

4) I don’t think so that there are any emotions within the script but then again, what the barber is feeling towards Sam is an emotion shown just in a different way. But there is definitely this edge of the seat scene in the audience where they are thinking of what will happen, other then that the story builds up very slowly and picks up really fast.

5) Both Sam and the Barber have different objectives in the story as well as having their own story to tell. Sam objective is to get an hair cut done and get it over with. While the barber objective it to cut his customer hair and also teach him an lesson on how to behave front of the elders. By the looks of Sam, Sam background story is more likely to be parents split up, he made friends with wrong crowd as not attention was given to him by his parents. This maybe his story but who knows? Barber story maybe that he might have had a bad experience with some other random boy who was just like Sam, and he wants to take revenge from him where he couldn’t do anything back then.

6) The beats of the characters starts to kicks in from the beginning and keeps on building fast in the middle and in the end it becomes very clear what the action is going to be. But before that the tension builds questions in the audience mind on what will happen.

7) It is very close to the reality today as the script gives a clear understanding of how an elderly person thinks of today’s generation. It challenges their way of teachings and up bringing.

8) I have a very clear image of how the end product will be like. I don’t have any scene planned on paper yet but visually I can see how each scene will be like. I have someone in my mind who I don’t think but I know that will suite the character of Sam. It’s just the matter of getting him to say yes that he will play Sam. If he does agree, I don’t know if he will be any good in front of the camera and be natural. For barber I am still looking for someone as I want someone who actually looks innocent but hides a dark face behind the innocence. Location wise getting an old looking barber shop is not very easy now days as there are very few barber shops around now but the search is still on. The equipment list isn’t yet important, that is what I think until the location, cast, and the script isn’t finished. However I do know what equipment I need though.

9) I wish to accomplish a really good meaningful script first. Plan each scene and make it easier for the audience to understand. Work on each situation in the scene so the audience don’t get lost. Make sure the actors are the right choice for the story so the audience could understand their needs and actions.

10) I have not yet made a story board as the script isn’t finished yet. However like I said before that I have visually images of the type of scenes would be best for the script. The work is still in progress.

So Close

Just to let most of the people know, who view my Blog through my myspace link who want’s to know what's been happening with the book that I have been writing for a long time. Well it's finally finished, well just the first draft. The manuscript still needs a lot of time for me to improve it and correct the mistakes, improve the characters, the plot and everything else basically.

Those people who have read the first draft so far haven given me their feedbacks and I thank them so much for it as they have told me their honest opinions on it, well they said that they were being honest. They have liked the book so far and hopefully others will also like it too. I will soon upload a PDF file of the first draft and will send the link for it to everyone so it’s viewable by everyone.

PDP- Personal Digital Production

To me PDP (PERRSONAL DIGITAL PRODUCTION) means , getting a camera, microphne and headphone and going away and making a documentry, movie or what so ever on your own...
You don't need extra helpers like, camera man, sound man, and what ever job man there is availabe... All comes to you when you decided to do a PDP.

I think it is one of the most easiest and also at the same time hardest task to do when you decide to take on such task...

One of the good thing about PDP is that you do what ever you like and how ever you like it. For example if you are doing some sort of documentry on for example, people with Aids, Cancer, or anyother problem or disbility, they tend to be more open to you when there is only one person around, their attitude and behaviour is a lot realistic and natural (the way it should be) for this sort of documentries. They feel more comfortable and relax, and they ignor that there is a camera watching them, but if there was a whole crew of camera man, sound, lightining, producer, runner boy etc, they wouldn't be as open as tehy would be when there is only one person who would be doing the job of ten people at once. Through PDP you come close to people and end of the day the results are that the documentry looks and feel origional and not some made up ones.

But the bad thing about PDP is that it may take you longer to get your work done on time. For example if you work for a TV Channel's News Slot, they would give you a time limit to go and shot a documentry to be shown at the 6'o clock new in the evening. that mean you have less time to go and and perpare your self for the documetry, research the subject, find a location, get the interviews done, edit it, and air it by the end of day.... With PDP it'll take longer, where as if you have a crew, you get things done on time and your ready to show you footage by the time given. the documentries made as a crew tends to be a bit more professional and better in the sence of that there was more then one person doing different roles. but the problem with that is, that you dont get the same feel from the interviewee, like you would get it if there was only one person interviewing them...
